ABOUT SMARTTRANSPORTATION.ORG
OUR PURPOSE:
SmartTransportation.org is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organized to increase the awareness and availability of clean technology in the transportation sector across the US. Other organizations working with SmartTransportation.org on hybrid vehicles for NYC include NRDC, The League of Conservation Voters, Sierra Club, American Lung Association of NY and Set America Free.
In 2005, SmartTransportation.org took the lead in advocating for hybrid taxi cabs in New York. Today the city has over 800 hybrid taxis on its streets, and the TLC has mandated that the entire fleet change to high-mileage, low-emissions vehicles by 2012.
OUR GOALS:
Our long-term goals include:
- The promotion of the use of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles as taxi cabs, public transportation and delivery fleets in cities across the US.
- To implement our reform in NYC, San Francisco and Chicago to increase the number of hybrid taxis and assist other cities to adopt changes to allow use of these vehicles as taxis
- The support of federal and state legislation to promote tax incentives for the use of hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles as taxis and in public transportation
- Support of congestion pricing in NYC
- Support of regulations on heavy trucks in Manhattan to improve the safetey of New Yorkers and reduce congestion and gridlock
